This was my reading this morning. I thought I should share it and a little about what God is using it to teach me.
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected,5 "Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages.t"6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.
7 "Leave her alone," Jesus replied. "It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.8 You will always have the poor among you,t but you will not always have me."
You see friends Martha was serving and paying attention to the details of the dinner and her guests. Judas was clutching his pocket book. But Mary, Mary was understanding where her Lord was headed and literally poured out her dowry on His feet. She reached out in total abandon and gave Him all of her heart and attention. That bottle of perfume cost over a whole years salary in that day. Judas sold Jesus out for 30 pieces of silver worth less than half of that bottle of perfume.
"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Luke 12:34 Mary's treasure was literally at Jesus' feet. Judas' treasure was in his purse.
How are you approaching your Master today? Are you running toward Him with total abandon? Or are you holding tightly to earthly things? If you are relying on your savings account for security your treasure is stored in the wrong place.
